The WA7ARC Amateur Radio Club's First Annual Fox Hunt has concluded and the results are in.

Mary Box, NG7C and Art Jury, KF7GD Receive Trophies

Mary Bos, NG7C and Art Jury, KF7GD Receive their Trophies

Both the Basic and Advanced foxes were located within the time limits imposed, resulting in the award of both prize packages.  Congratulations to Mary Bos, NG7C and Art Jury, KF7GD for their dogged determination and ability to think creatively!

Here's what some of the participants had to say in follow-up eMails:

"Thanks for hosting, I had a great time."

"I enjoyed the hunt very much and it was great to meet you folks."

"Thank you and please send my thanks to Bill, William, and Lori for the fox hunt.  And especially thank Art for letting me tag along."

Our first fox hunt went very well, and met most of our goals.  Joe Ledesma, KA7AIRTurn out was a little less than expected, but we were prepared for any eventuality.  It was a pleasure to have a visit from Joe Ledesma, KA7AIR, President of the Grays Harbor Amateur Radio Club in a gentlemanly show of support for our event.

Mary Bos, NG7C, locates the Basic Fox Mary Bos, NG7C, was our Basic Hunt winner, picking up on the process right away - her ability to think outside the box brought her to the transmitter quickly.  To Mary, our prize of $50 cash, a cool trophy, and two books from the O'Reilly collection were appreciated, "Out of all of the trophies I have received through the years for different sporting competitions, your has the most class -- wood and all."  Buried in the tall grasses that bordered the power transfer station just West of Hoquiam High School, the fox was successfully hunted down and terminated in a couple of hours.  Congratulations to Mary!

Mary teamed up with Art Jury, KF7GD, to win the Advanced Hunt, which took everyone on a wild ride around the basin.  Hidden in the tall grasses behind the Bishop Athletic Complex, the time to locate the fox was a little over five hours.  This transmitter was tricky (intentionally so!) due to short transmit times, low power, and placement on the other side of the water from where the hunt started.  We were pleasantly surprised when Art and Mary returned to base camp with their newly found friend in tow...  The 'fox' had his innards stripped out, and he was mounted to a plaque to commemorate their success.  Mary and Art split up a great prize package, which included $100 cash; Five book selections from O'Reilly Books; and dinner at Gambelli's Italian Restaurant in Aberdeen.

Following the event, the planning committee and support team gathered at Gambelli's to enjoy a well-deserved dinner.  Thanks to Pierre for taking good care of us and keeping us fed and watered!

In future events we're likely to change some of the rules in an effort to encompass more basic level hunters, but everyone seems satisfied with how the event worked overall.
