WB7DIY, James Yemm, has erected the mother of all wind generators. 30' in the air, this three-blade system produces around 30-50A during 10-15 MPH winds. Driving a battery bank with a capacity around 2300 Amp-hour, James is currently working on converting that wind energy into a heating solution for his home.
The wind generator is a 12V version of Hugh Piggot's Volvo-hub design, modified with a different tail assembly. The generator is producing nicely -- at normal wind speeds (3-5 MPH) we're seeing 1-3 A coming from the unit. At 10 MPH, we're seeing 30 Amps and as we pass 15 MPH, we're seeing more than 50 Amps. The highest recorded has been 90A but we didn't have the anemometer recording at the time. We suspect this was around 25 MPH winds. We'll try to get you some pix of the setup, so you can get a better idea how the system is set up and working. |
